When it comes to editing a PDF file on Mac, you have two choices — upload the PDF to an online conversion service, or use a Mac PDF editor app.
While online PDF conversion services have their own advantages and are usually free (though some may have certain restrictions), we assume you’ve already tried out. So, we are not going to talk much about them.
Instead, we want to show you the best PDF editor app for Macs. After all, you are a business person who handles PDF documents on a regular basis. Desktop software is more convenient to use, and more likely to improve your business productivity.
Here we round up some of the most powerful Mac PDF editors currently in the market. The recommendations below are for Mac users only, if you are on a PC, see our review of best PDF editor for Windows 10.
Online PDF Editor vs. Desktop PDF Editing App
There is no absolute answer as to which editor is better, but here’s our take:
If you are in a hurry, and you only have several non-confidential PDFs to edit, go for online PDF editing services like PDFescape. Simply open a web browser, upload your PDF file and start editing.
Note: we suggest you not to upload any private or confidential documents due to security concerns. Because your PDF files are going to be uploaded elsewhere in the cloud you can’t control or access.
If your documents are important, and you only have minor editing tasks such as: add signature, comment, merge/split pages, etc.; We recommend Preview — a free built-in app in macOS that allows you to edit images and PDF files. We’ll cover this app more below.
How about Adobe Acrobat for Mac? It’s great, but our main concern is its price — $300 direct purchase (or $15 per month if you go for subscription), it’s definitely on the pricer side. Plus, you can get almost all similar features from other Mac PDF editors we recommend below while paying much less.
Best PDF Editor for Mac: What to Look for?
The following factors are merely what we think you should consider in order to narrow down the list to come up with your favorite tools. They are, however, by no means the industry standards.
Security: all downloadable software must be free of virus and malware. Though Macs are widely considered to be more secure than Windows PCs, recent news reveals that macOS isn’t safe anymore due to crapware and malware threats. We make sure the PDF editor app we recommend are clean and safe.
PDF Editing Features: the Mac PDF editor you choose should be able to do basic editing tasks like annotation, add/delete pages, form filling, highlighting, and so on. Advanced editing features include: add a password, create links, export PDFs to other document formats, etc. Bottom line: the best Mac PDF editing software should offer more features than what Preview does.
OCR Support: this is important because if a PDF editor doesn’t support OCR (Optical Character Recognition), you can’t use it to handle scanned PDF files which are essentially images. OCR is able to extract all the content in a scanned PDF file and export objects into editable texts or graphs. The software that integrates OCR technology will save you lots of headaches when it comes to editing scanned PDF documents.
Ease of Use: this is the main factor that makes desktop software superior to most online PDF conversion tools. If you’ve used some online PDF editors, you probably feel the navigation and operation are not that smooth. You need a lot of back and forth to make the change to a desirable level. A great PDF editor app should make it hassle-free and enjoyable during the editing process.
macOS Compatibility: The software you choose should also be able to run on the latest macOS Catalina and be compatible with some older macOS versions that are widely used by Mac users. If it can’t, it would be a waste of your time to download and install it on your Mac on to find it doesn’t work. Besides a PDF editor app that keeps updating tends to be more trustworthy and reliable.
Help/Support: We value those developers that provide helpful tutorials and guides to facilitate the customer experience. Also, it’s ideal that users can reach out to them via email, phone, live chat, etc. for any inquiries or technical questions.

Great App…LOVE IT!
I was using a very expensive PDF progam and needed to upgrade because it was not compatible with my Macbook Pro but I didn’t want to spend hundreds of dollars. I had never heard of PDF Expert and was a little hesitant to purchase. However, since purchasing this program I have been amazed at what it can do and how easy it is to use! Not only does it do..not all..but a lot of what my expensive program did…. it does it at a much lower cost.
I don’t use all the PDF Expert’s bells and whistles that the other reviewers mention, but I do scan all my household documents and receipts and important emails. Sometimes I forget to include a page(s). It’s so easy to merge the page(s) into the master document. My scanner sometimes scans blank pages or has them upside down. No worries since I can fix all those issues with PDF Expert. I love how fast I can rearrange and/or delete pages within the document. I could go on and on…but I think you get the message. Although I purchased the app through the Apple App Store.I did have to contact the Readdle Customer Service with a minor update question. I have rarely seen such fast, professional and caring service. Alexandra at Readdle was wonderful and I also want to give her 5 stars! After reading some of the other reviews, I want to add that I have been using this prgram about 1.5 years and so far the program has never crashed nor has any of my documents been corrupted. Thank you Readdle Team! PDF Expert rocks!
I spend bulk of my time reading PDF files, while making heavy annotations on them. In its new editions (2.X), PDF Expert has established truly praise-worthy feats in several fronts. In particular, annotating and feature-editing is now remarkably powerful and reliable. For example, you can very easily print only a certain portion of a page by simply removing other elements (figures, text, etc) to save ink. Simple dragging any image into an open PDF page, in addition to editing/cropping/re-positioning of pre-existing images, is also super helpful, if one uses PDF files as a notebook. As far as annotation is concerned, one can use an open PDF page as if it is an open canvas inside Photoshop. All these powerful functions can be done without eating up system resources.
Another pretty powerful feature is that one can open two windows from a single file—for example, the left window shows page 3 whereas the right window shows the page 7 of the same document, a truly powerful feature for side-by-side analysis of different segments of a single PDF. Personally, I would be really happy if the future edition provides a PLAYLIST function. This will allow one to create a playlist file linking to specific (eg. all the currently open) PDF files, which will then be used later to open all previously working files at once by simple double-clicking the playlist file. The best, but not quite perfect, PDF reader
This is the best PDF reader out there, in my opinion. As an academic, I use Readdle’s PDF reader daily—it is perhaps my most used app. It is an especially useful app if, like me, you are pretty deep into the Apple ecosystem: I have Readdle’s PDF Expert on my iPhone, iPad, iMac, and Macbook and, with the help of Dropbox, I can sealmlessly move between my devices without having to do things like email to myself whatever document I’m working on. PDF Expert is wonderfully integrated into my workflow. The options for annotating documents, running split screens, etc. are excellent.
Though I think this app is the best PDF reader available, I do think there is room for improvement. Here are a couple things I would like to see: - On the iPad version of the app, there is a view option that trims the white/blank borders of a document so that just the text part of the document shows up. It would be great if they could engineer a view-option like that for the Mac version. The current work-around involves cropping the document—but this actually alters the document itself. What I’d like is a view-option, that has the same view-effect but without altering the document. - I would like to see an additional full-screen option that hides (or auto-hides) the top toolbar. This way the whole screen can be used for reading purposes. Information
